Essential Ha Giang
Destinations

From the Heaven Gate at Quan Ba to the remote villages of the far north, every kilometre of the Ha Giang Loop offers something genuinely extraordinary.

Dong Van & Meo Vac

The Iconic Places of
Dong Van District

The most dramatic section of the loop. Every stop between Dong Van and Meo Vac deserves your attention.

Cao Bang Province

Cao Bang — Vietnam's
Hidden Northern Wonder

Cao Bang rewards the traveler willing to go further. Fewer crowds, more spectacular nature and the country's most impressive waterfall.

Why visit Cao Bang? Ban Gioc Waterfall alone is worth the journey — but the full Cao Bang experience, with Cao Bang First-Time Guide, Pac Bo and the Cao Bang Loop, makes this a destination that rivals Ha Giang for sheer scenic power. Most travelers combine both regions in a 7–10 day Northeast Vietnam itinerary.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked
Questions

Real questions from international travelers — answered honestly by our local team.

Technically yes — Vietnamese law requires a valid licence to ride a motorbike, and an International Driving Permit (IDP) based on your home country licence is the legally correct approach for foreign visitors. In practice, enforcement is inconsistent in this remote region, and many travelers ride without one. However, if you are involved in an accident without proper documentation, your travel insurance may be void. Our honest advice: if you have a licence and can obtain an IDP before travelling, do so. Alternatively, choose our Easy Rider service where our licensed local driver handles all of this for you.
We strongly advise against it. The Ha Giang Loop is not a beginner route — it includes steep passes, tight switchbacks, loose gravel and sections with sheer drops. Riders who have never been on a motorbike before, or who have very limited experience, face genuine risk here. Our Easy Rider service exists precisely for this situation: an experienced local driver rides, you sit on the back and enjoy the scenery. It is just as immersive as riding yourself — arguably more so, because you can focus on the landscape instead of the road.
Yes — and honestly, many experienced riders choose Easy Rider too because it lets them fully experience the journey rather than concentrating on road management. Our Easy Rider drivers know every corner of the loop, know which viewpoints to stop at, can translate and connect you with local communities, and are experienced in mountain riding conditions. You will have more local insight, more photos, and likely a richer experience than going alone.
It depends entirely on your priorities. A private car offers comfort, air conditioning, protection from weather and the ability to travel with luggage easily. It is ideal for families, older travelers, or anyone with physical limitations. The trade-off is that some viewpoints and passes are best experienced in open air on two wheels. Many travelers choose a hybrid approach: Easy Rider for the key scenic days, private car for longer transfer sections. We can design exactly this kind of combination for you.
Yes — with the right setup. We regularly arrange family tours in private cars with local guides. Children tend to love the scenery, the local food and the cultural experiences. Easy Rider with children is also possible on calm sections. We do not recommend self-ride motorbikes with children under any circumstances. We will always tailor the itinerary to ensure a pace and route that works comfortably for families — just let us know ages and any specific requirements when you contact us.
Ha Giang in winter (November to February) can have thick mountain fog, especially on the high passes. This makes riding slower and requires more care, but experienced riders and Easy Rider drivers navigate it regularly. Heavy rain in summer can make some unpaved sections slippery. Our drivers know the roads in all conditions and will always make the safe call — including delaying a pass section until fog clears. We monitor weather forecasts throughout your tour and adjust timing as needed.
Yes. Even in summer, temperatures on the passes at 1,000–1,500m can be significantly cooler than Ha Giang city, and wind chill on a motorbike magnifies this considerably. A light windproof jacket and a layer underneath is recommended year-round. In winter (November to February), you will need proper warm layers — temperatures at Dong Van can drop close to 0°C at night. We provide a full packing list once you book, tailored to your travel dates.
Ban Gioc is located about 90km from Cao Bang city on a winding mountain road. It is technically possible to reach independently by hiring a local motorbike or combining local buses, but this requires time, language skills and comfort with uncertainty. Most international travelers find that booking a private car day trip or a guided tour is far more efficient and enjoyable — it also includes stops at Cao Bang First-Time Guide and ensures you have someone to navigate permits and boat arrangements at the falls itself.
The minimum to see the core Ha Giang Loop highlights is 3 days / 2 nights. This covers Quan Ba, Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng, Meo Vac and Lung Cu at a manageable pace. Four days allows for a more relaxed tempo with time to explore markets, villages and viewpoints properly. If you want to add trekking in Du Gia or Hoang Su Phi, budget 5–7 days. We always recommend not rushing Ha Giang — this is a place to slow down and absorb.
We recommend a minimum of 7 days for a satisfying combined trip: 4 days for Ha Giang and 3 days for Cao Bang. If time allows, 8–10 days gives you breathing room to explore properly without feeling rushed. Many travellers begin in Hanoi, spend 4–5 nights on the Ha Giang Loop, transfer to Cao Bang via Bao Lac, spend 2–3 nights there and return to Hanoi. This circuit avoids backtracking and covers both provinces efficiently.
Absolutely yes. Dong Van at night — with its stone houses, lantern-lit streets and cold mountain air — has a completely different and very special atmosphere compared to daytime. Spending a night here also lets you visit the Sunday market early before the crowds and tour groups arrive. The guesthouses in the Old Quarter are basic but atmospheric. We always include an overnight in Dong Van as part of our standard loop itineraries.
ATMs are available in Ha Giang city and in Dong Van town, but they are unreliable in the smaller villages and Meo Vac. Card payments are not accepted in most guesthouses or restaurants along the loop. We strongly recommend withdrawing sufficient Vietnamese Dong before departing Ha Giang city. Our team can advise on how much cash to carry for different tour durations.
Signal varies significantly across the loop. Ha Giang city, Dong Van and Meo Vac town centres have reasonable 4G. The mountain passes and remote village sections often have no signal at all for extended periods. Viettel is the most reliable carrier in this region — if you have a Vietnamese SIM, make sure it is Viettel. Our Easy Rider drivers have local SIMs and can coordinate with us if any logistics need adjusting en route.
Yes — comprehensive travel insurance that explicitly covers motorbike riding is essential. Standard travel insurance policies often exclude motorbike riding unless you have a valid licence for the class of bike being ridden in the country you are visiting. Read your policy carefully and call your insurer if in doubt. If your insurance does not cover motorbike riding, choose our Easy Rider or private car option — this way the driving risk rests with our professional team, not with you personally.
