1What riding the Ha Giang Loop is really like

The Loop is the road circuit through the far north of Ha Giang province: from Ha Giang town up to Quan Ba Heaven Gate, through the pine country of Yen Minh, across the Dong Van Karst Plateau – a UNESCO Global Geopark of grey limestone peaks – to Dong Van and Meo Vac, and back. In between lies Ma Pi Leng Pass, the cliff road above the green Nho Que River that most people come for.

Most travellers ride it in three days: enough time for the big viewpoints, a night in Dong Van’s old quarter and a boat on the Nho Que without spending the whole day on the bike. Two days works if you are short on time; four or five days lets you add the quieter Du Gia valley, a market day or a day of trekking at the start.

You choose how you travel. With an Easy Rider you sit behind a local driver and simply look at the mountains. Riding yourself makes sense only if you already ride confidently on steep, wet roads and hold the licence your insurance asks for. A car or Jeep shows you the same views with a roof and a seat belt – the best choice for families and anyone who does not want to ride.

  • September–October: rice terraces turn gold.

FAQ

5Ha Giang Loop questions

How many days do I need for the Ha Giang Loop?

Three days is the classic length: Heaven Gate, Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng and the Nho Que River at a comfortable pace. Two days is possible but fast; four or five days adds Du Gia, a market or a trekking day and gives you slower mornings.

Easy Rider or riding myself – which should I choose?

If you have not ridden a manual or semi-automatic bike on steep mountain roads, choose an Easy Rider. The roads are narrow, full of hairpins and shared with trucks and buffalo. Riding yourself is for experienced riders with a valid licence and insurance that covers it.

Can I do the Loop by car instead?

Yes. Ask us about a car or Jeep with a driver: same route, same viewpoints, more comfort, and it works in any weather. The price depends on how many people share the car.

When is the best time to ride the Loop?

September to November and March to May are the favourites – clear days, rice harvest in September, buckwheat flowers in October–November. June to August is the rainy season; December to February is cold and often foggy on the passes.

Can I combine the Loop with trekking?

Yes – our Trek & Ride tours start with one or two days on foot in the villages near Ha Giang town, then ride the Loop. It is the most complete way to see Ha Giang in 3 to 5 days.
